RII09 RESOURCES AND INFRASTRUCTURE INDUSTRY TRAINING PACKAGE CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

Following the endorsement of Version 2.0 of the RII09 Training Package, SkillsDMC has been preparing to implement further continuous improvement changes.  These changes will be rolled out in two stages in order to minimise the impact on training providers, industry and other stakeholders.

1) ISC Upgrades – Version 2.0 to Version 2.1
These are minor changes to existing units of competency and qualifications that do not affect the performance outcomes of the unit/qualification.  This could include:

  • Adding or removing elective units from a qualification (which does not result in a code or name change)
  • Corrections or edits within units (which could result in a code change eg from RIIXXX201A to RIIXXX201B
  • Skill sets that group existing units of competency
  • Updating superseded imported units in the training package

2) National Skills Standards Council (NSSC) Endorsement Required Changes – Version 2.1 to 3.0
These are significant changes to qualifications and units of competency including new units.  This will include:

  • New concrete road paving units
  • Amalgamation of 8 streamed Certificate III Civil Construction qualifications (action determined at industry consultation held in Brisbane to comply with the Flexibility in Packaging Rules policy)
  • New underground coal mine diesel engine systems maintenance units of competency/ skill set

All of the continuous improvement changes will be in response to issues posted to the SkillsDMC online Issues Register.

We anticipate the changes will be by  the end of December 2011.

The Issues Register is available at http://www.skillsdmc.com.au

FOUNDATION SKILLS AND THE AUSTRALIAN CORE SKILLS FRAMEWORK

FOUNDATION SKILLS TRAINING PACKAGE

The National Skills Standards Council (NSSC) has agreed to the development of the Foundation Skills Training Package and is now working with Industry Skills Councils to determine how streamlined Training Packages can improve foundation skills.
The aim of the project is to provide:

National standards for foundation skills training

  • More pathways into vocational qualifications
  • Options for foundation skills units that can be used across training packages or be embedded within units or qualifications
  • Options to mix and match products and training practices to suit individual learner needs

SkillsDMC will be looking at the Foundation Skills Training Package and the RII09 Training Package to identify where opportunities may exist for our industry sectors and to identify where resource contextualisation or resource development can provide enhanced opportunities for people entering our industries.

For further information, please contact Paul Humphries :  Phumphries@skillsdmc.com.au

AUSTRALIAN CORE SKILLS FRAMEWORK

The Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) describes levels of performance in the 5 core skills of learning, reading, writing, oral communication and numeracy.  In accordance with policy arising from the VET Products in the 21st Century Policy Framework, SkillsDMC is currently undertaking a project to identify the ACSF levels for mandatory and specified elective units of competency in RII09 qualifications from AQF levels I to IV.

The outcome of this project will be to gain a clearer understanding of the core skills required to satisfy the performance outcomes of the units of competency.

Industry consultation is a critical step in the process of identifying core skills that may apply to units of competency.  SkillsDMC is seeking industry representatives to participate in the validation of the project work that is currently being undertaken.

To participate in this process please forward your contact details to the project manager: phumphreys@skillsdmc.com.au
