MERV - the Men's Educational Rural Van

In the country, where men's health services are few and far between, men's health has become a major issue. The Community Health Team from Mudgee have come up with an innovative way to tackle this problem - they have created MERV - the Men's Educational Rural Van. Winners of the 2007 HESTA Australian Nursing Award for Innovation in Nursing.

Health Promotion Officer

Health promotion officers work with various groups to improve the health of individuals and the community. They create supportive environments, strengthen community action, and reorient health services.

Health promotion officers often take part in campaigns and small community programs covering issues such as family, the environment, social change, nutrition, exercise, drugs and sexuality.

Hot Issue: What is a career?

A career is not a job; it’s your life process through the paid and voluntary jobs you undertake throughout your life.

Where to start?

Think about your interests and what you like doing, your personal skills and the type of environment you feel more comfortable in.

About 10 years ago, John Holland, an American Psychologist created a theory called Vocational Personalities, where he matched people to career choices.

This means that if you like doing certain things in certain places you are more inclined to choose a specific job or industry.

So, every month I will dedicate this column to each career type, so stay tuned to check if you can find your career type!

National Men's Health Week, 15-21 June

Men and boys face different health concerns than women and girls, and National Men's Health Week is an opportunity to both acknowledge these differences and look for ways to improve the health and wellbeing of men and boys.

Year of the Blood Donor 2009

Do you know that only one donation can help save the lives of up to 3 people?
The Year of the Blood Donor will acknowledge the life-saving role of Australian blood donors and encourage non-donors to find their blood type and roll up their sleeves to give blood.

Some blood facts:

1 in 3 Australians will need blood products in their lifetime.
Only 1 in 30 Australians donate blood.
Last year, 21,000 donations were needed each week across Australia.
